COMMUNITIES/COSMETOLOGISTS:
How You Can Help
How You Can
Help Victims of Domestic Violence
- Ask the right questions. If you notice an injury, inquire about it
if you feel comfortable. Example: "I have seen other women who
have this type of injury, and they have been hurt by their partners.
I wonder if this is happening to you?" Make sure you have privacy
if you ask the questions.
- Believe the victims story.
- Listen and give non-blaming feedback.
- Let the victim know she is not alone.
- Realize the victim may be in great danger.
Do not underestimate this fact.
- Say, "You are not to blame for the abuse. It's not your fault.
There is not excuse for being violent." Do not say things like,
"If my partner ever abuse me, I would leave the first time it happened."
- Tell the victim that domestic violence is a CRIME.
- Put the victim in touch with resources that can help.
- Dont offer advice. Especially, do not ADVISE her to
leave without knowing how dangerous such a choice
might be for her. Let her know there are people
available who can help her leave safely. Offer
support for choices. Dont blame the victim if her
choices are not the ones you would make.
